Great Day for Play!

What a wonderful day is has been. It began at 6:30am and making a breakfast of pancakes and tall glasses of milk before heading to my son's last soccer game of the season. The game began at 8am and was a joy to watch. All of the hard work he and his team mates have been doing figuring out strategy finally paid off. The other team was faster and taller, but our team used their skills to counter any shortcomings and won their game. Hopefully, all the boys will be on the same team this Fall. Afterwards, we went shopping for a Mother's Day present for his mom. The rest of the morning was back at home where he found a new buddy named "Spikey". I believe in the "catch and release" program, so we let his new friend go to find the rest of his family.

My son and I experienced a first together, today. We went to a very large park and launched the Estes Rocket I got him for his 7th birthday. He really didn't comprehend what was going to happen until we ran through the first countdown: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, blastoff!!! After a one second delay that seemed to last for minutes, it took off quickly into the pale blue sky with a trail of white smoke trailing behind it. He became very excited! And, as the rocket reached apogee, a small blast ejected the parachute and the rocket floated quickly to the ground with the wind. He, immediately went off running in a full sprint after it. The launch lug, which guides the rocket off the launch pad, had become unglued. For a moment, I thought we were finished for the day, but some ingenuity with a rubber band had us back in business. We launched one more time with my son at the launch controls, and, again, off he went chasing it down to recover his rocket. A fine time for both of us.

Later, we stopped by a local bookstore so my son could choose a Mother's Day card for his mommy. Afterwards, we hurriedly made our way to an Austin favorite burger place for some fine food and, then, ice cream, which is connected to the restaurant. We sat outside enjoying our cold desert: him (Belgian chocolate with "killed" m&m's) me (Mexican vanilla with fresh strawberries--a.k.a. "sorority girl special", don't ask...). He played on the playground after finishing his ice cream while I finished mine. A nice, relaxing time.

And, now, we're finally back home. I just took my shower and he's in the tub taking a bubble bath. And, he's singing OneRepublic's "Stop and Stare"--he heard it on the radio on the way home from dinner and has a talent for repeating songs after hearing them one time.

A great day and an awesome son! Hopefully you enjoyed yours at least a portion of how much we did ours, today.
